Det var alldeles en öfverraskning för oss att få höra att du är i detta landet, och att du redan har varit här en länge tid. Och du allerredan har arbete och bra betalt. Häromkring har nubegunnande byggare $1.50 pr dag och maten. Vill du söka sådant arbete, så skall du gå till Minneapolis, din morbroder Herman Person kunde kanske hjelpa dig der. Vi har 8 mil till vår närmaste stad, Carver, som är 25 mil ifrån Minneapolis. Jag har ingen jernvägskarta så jag kan icke säga dig hur långt det är till Ada.

Du kommer väl hit och hälsar på oss innan du reser tillbaka till Sverige igen, hvilket hvanligen är alla pojkars föresatts när dem kommit till Amerika. Wi har alla hälsa förutom farfar är sjuk och har legat i 4 dagar.

Ada reste till Aberdeen S. Dakota för en vecka sedan. Jag har icke haft bref ifrån din fader sedan i januari nå. Nu har han väl så brådt så att han icke hinner att skrifva.

Jag har intet vidare att skrifva för denna gång. Glöm icke att skrifva till oss ibland, så vi får veta hvar du är, och hur du trifs.

It was quite a surprise for us to hear that you are in this country, and that you have already been here a long time. And you allready have work work and is well paid. Around here beginning builders have $ 1.50 pr day and the food. Do you want to seek such work, you should go to Minneapolis, your uncle Herman Person could perhaps help you there. We have 8 miles to our nearest town, Carver, that is 25 miles from Minneapolis. I have no railway map so I can not tell you how far it is to Ada.

[We hope that] You're coming here to visit us before traveling back to Sweden again, which usually what all the boys have set themselves to do, when they come to America. We all have health, except grandfather is ill and has been for 4 days. 

Ada travelled to Aberdeen, S. Dakota a week ago. I have not had a letter from your father since January now. Now he is probably in such a hurry that he will not have time to write.

I have nothing further to write  this time. Do not forget to write to us at times, so we will get to know where you are, and how you like it.

Älskade Broder med Familj!!

Nu sänder jag dig det budskapet att vi äro faderlösa. Du har på sätt och vis varit i det öfver 29 år, men nu är jag blefven det och.

I det att vår gamla Pappa, efter endast 12 dagars sjukdom, stilla och uttan några svårare plågor och i tro och förtröstan på sin Herre och Frälsare, aflev på Midsommarsdagen kl. 4 e.m. och på tisdags e.m. den 27 juni begrafdes han i Wäst Unions kyrkogård, 86 år 11 må gammal. Hvile han i frid till uppståndelsesmorgon.

Hit till begrafningen var mucke folk. 28 vagnar körde härifrån och många mötte vi kyrkan, så att kyrkan var nära full med folk. Och prästen gjorde en mucket vacker predikan, med ledning af Ebreer-brefvets 4 kapptittel 9, 10 och 11te verserna. Och likkistan stod fram vid altaret, och efter predikans slut, så öppnades locket på kistan och allt folket går i parad fram och kastar en sista blick på liket. Sedan bars kistan ut, och jordfästningen skedde i grafven.

Bärarne vore hans systersöner Anders Petter och Svante Skatt, Petter och Alfred Lund, Wicktor och Johan Hullt.

Pappas sjukdom började med förstoppning på båda visena [på båda visen, alltså ], hvilket snart nog blef af Docktorn förhjelpt, men sedan gick det på honom ovetande när som hälst i sängen, så att mamma hade nog att ta i. Han hadde icke några svåra plågor utan låg och dusade och sofde nästan hemt. Så att både han och vi trode icke att det var till döds, men sedan blev han allt vekare och vekare och kunde icke äta. På det 6te dugnet gaf han upp hoppet på lifvet, och vi kallade Prästen hit, och han avlade en god bekännelse. - Så att vi behöfver icke att sörja såsom de, som icke hafva något hopp. - Sedan började han att tala dåligt, tungan svulnade. De två sista dugnen var han målös men sans hadde tills några timmar före han dog. Se?? dagen han är dock aldrig så lång att icke dess afton skall stunda, då lemnas vårt verk, då tustna vår sång, må vi det med allvar begrunda. __________

På torsdagen var Docktorn här den 3je och sista gången, och då sade han att det är intet att göra, han kan dö när som hälst, och han lefver icke öfver 72 timmar, och just på den 24 timmen efter dog han.

Jag vill något nämna om begrafningsexpenserna, - för att det var för varmt så måste liket balsameras samma qväll. Kostade $15, svepningen $5, kistan med bax $65, likvagnen $7, blommor och kransar $4, svart tug att kläda grafven med 35c. $1 till dem som klädde kyrkan, $4 för grafningen. Docktorn och medeciner $6 ~~~

Jag ämnar fråga Broder Svante om han vill hjelpa mig något med dessa expenserna. Men han kanske svarar som han gjorde då jag var med honom på söndagsmorgon och omtalade att Pappa var död, och bad honom gå med till staden i morgon och köpa kista m.m. - det får ni ställa om bäst ni vill sjelfva, det brur jag mig intet om.  ---- Vi sände bud till honom när pappa var sjuk, och han kom på söndag qväll, och satt vid pappa knappt en halv timme. Sedan sände vi bud till honom att pappa var sämre men han kom icke.

Vi har för närvarande alla hälsa, men Mamma är ganska trött ännu efter all den vecka och besturen före och efter begrafningen. Och så är här så rusligt varmt om dagarne och nätterna med, så man kan knappast sofva mer än halfva natten. Hela juni må har varit ovanligt varm, så att grödan drifves till mognad i förtid. Vi har haft många goda regnskurar så grödan har sett lofvande ut hittills, men nu blifver den förjagad.

Vi håller på med höingen vi har tatt in 27 las och det är ungefär hälften. Höingen är äfven 2 vecer förtidig och höet är tunt, all klöfver dog bort i vinter.

För ett par veckor sedan blef vi öfverraskade at ett bref ifrån eder son Gustaf hvilken sade att han har varit här i landet sedan aprill och det hadde vi alldrig hört talas om. Jag svarade honom strax på hans bref, men sedan har vi icke hört ifr honom. --- Nu skall jag sända honom några rader och omtala att farfar är död.

Jag skall omtala att jemt 2 veckor före pappa, begrafdes Sev?? Erika Anna Stina, eller Mrs. Johannes Danielson, omkring 60 år.

Jag vill nu sluta detta sorgeliga bref, och innesluta både oss och eder i den allsmägtiges beskudd och att detta dödsfall måtta bringa oss alla till påminnelse om vår egen förestående bortgång, att när döden kallar oss, vi må vara såsom pappa nöjda och förhoppningsfulla i tron om våra synders förlåtelse för Jesu skull. "För döden jag ej fruktan bär när jag med Gud förenad är". Så skall hjertat tala, älskade Broder

Beloved Brother with Family!!

I am now sending you the message that we are orphans. You have in a sense been that for over 29 years, but I too have recently become that.
In this, that our old father, after only 12 days of illness, quietly and without difficult pains and with faith and trust in his Lord and Savior, passed away on Midsummer Day at. 4 p.m. and on Tuesday p.m. June 27, he was buried in Wäst Union's cemetery, 86 years 11 mo's old. May he rest in peace until the morning of the resurrection.

For the funeral came a lot of people here. 28 wagons left from here, and many we met at the church so that the church was almost full with people. And the Priest held a very beautiful sermon, with the guidance of the Hebrew letters 4 cappittel 9, 10 and 11th verses. And the coffin stood at the altar, and after the sermon ended, so the lid of the coffin was opened and all the people paraded past and cast a last glance at the corpse. Then the coffin was carried out, and the burial took place by the tomb.
Bearers were his nephews Anders Petter and Svante Skatt, Petter and Alfred Lund, Wicktor and Johan Hullt.

Dad's illness started with constipation in both ways, which soon enough became of remedied by the
Docktor, but then he went in bed, him unaware, so that Mom had enough to take do. He had no pains, but lay and dozed and slept almost all the time. So that both he and we thought that it was not towards death, but then he became weaker and weaker and could not eat. On the 6th day he gave up hope of life, and we called the pastor here, and he gave a good confession. - So that we need not to mourn as those who do not have any hope. - Then he began to speak with difficulty, the tongue swelled up. The last two days he was without speech but conscious until a few hours before he died. See ?? the day (he) is never so long that its evening shall not come, when we leave our work, our songs are silenced. May we ernestly ponder this.  __________
On the Thursday, the Docktor was here for the 3rd and last time, and then he said that there is nothing to do, he can die at any time, and he will not live more than 72 hours, and precisely on the 24 hours after he died.
I want to mention something about funeral costs, - because it was too hot so must the corpse be embalmed same evening. It cost $ 15, the burial shroud was $ 5, the coffin with box $ 65, $ 7 hearse, flowers and wreaths $ 4, black cloth to clothe the grave with 35c. $ 1 to those who dressed the church, $ 4 for the digging. The Docktor and medecines $ 6 ~~~
I intend to ask Brother Svante if he wants to help me some with these expenses. But he might respond as he did when I was with him on Sunday morning and told him that Daddy was dead, and asked him to go to the city tomorrow and buy the coffin, etc. - You may arrange that the way you want, I do not nothing about. ---- We sent a message to him when Dad was sick, and he came on Sunday evening, and sat by father barely half an hour. Then we sent word to him that dad was worse but he did not come.
2) We currently all have health, but Mom is pretty tired still after all the week and the chores before and after the funeral. And so it is here so terribly hot on the days and the nights too, so one can hardly sleep more than half the night. Throughout June it has been unusually warm, so the crop is driven to maturity ahead of schedule. We have had many good rains so the crops have looked promising so far, but now it becomes chased away.We're doing the hay harvest, we have taken 27 loads and that's about half of it. The hay harvest too is 2 weeks premature and the hay is thin, all clover died away in the winter.A couple of weeks ago we became surprised at a letter from your son Gustaf who said he has been in this country since Aprill and that we had never heard about [earlier]. I answered him immediately, but since we have not heard fr him. --- Now I will send him a few lines and tell him that grandfather is dead.I should mention that exactly 2 weeks before my father was buried Sev ?? Erika Anna Stina, or Mrs. John Danielson, about 60 years old of age.I now want to stop this sad letter, and enclose both us and you in theAllmighty's protection and that this death may bring us all to the reminder of our own imminent death, that when death calls us, we may be like daddy: happy and hopeful in the faith for forgiveness for our sins for Jesus' sake.
